Custom Cue Maker Kent Davis Reveals the Secrets Behind his Best Work
Call up cue maker Kent Davis, and you just might hear him
testing out the tone of one of his newly made cues in the back ground. As the
founder of KD Cues, he is very selective with the wood he uses, crafting choice
pieces "so the sound of the cue rings out sweet." Davis has spent the last
four years developing and perfecting an eight-piece radial laminated forearm,
which is no small task. "Getting everything perfectly centered and even was as
important as insuring there were no glue voids, which would deaden the cue," the
California native said. In this cue, Davis selected black ash burl to
laminate over the core material, lpe. Davis used this South American
hardwood because he says it's a straight-grained, stable material and accepts
glue very well. The four long points in this eight-point cue are re-cut
ebony with an inner re-cut point of Kingwood separated by three veneers.
The short points are ivory veneered in white and black, with an ivory diamond
inlay bordered in ebony and Kingwood. The Macassar ebony butt sleeve
features eight slender windows of black ash burl, with pairs of windows joined
by an overlapping Kingwood razor blade-shaped windows veneered in ebony main set
with an ivory diamond. So what is he looking for in the tone of his cues?
I want to see that the marriage of the butt and shaft is a good marriage if the
vibration rates don't agree with one another, you can get a very odd hit."
Perhaps Davis missed his calling in relationship counseling Nonetheless, he
makes a very "sound " cue. |
